Wyoming needs a proper storm — G2 for horizon glow, G3 for structure — but its altitude and aridity mean that when the storm arrives, the transparency is superb. The state's north edge is the percentage play.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Wyoming's key viewing latitude sits near 52° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
Altitude gives Wyoming a transparency edge in every season; the calendar decides how long the nights are and how often the storms come.
Displays here sit low in the north until the biggest storms, so the moon matters: use the bright half of the month for scouting and spend the new-moon weeks on watch.
Yellowstone's northeast valley is plowed year-round, sits under some of the darkest measured sky in the lower 48, and opens wide to the north. Pullouts are frequent; bison and elk on the road are the real nighttime hazard.
The state's northeast corner keeps low horizons over the Belle Fourche country, and the Tower makes an obvious foreground for storm photography from the surrounding public roads.
The high country along US 14A near Medicine Wheel stands above most of the atmosphere's haze with clean northern sightlines into Montana — a summer and early-fall option, before the passes close.
When the mountains are shut, the basin's northern edge toward Lovell offers dry air, sparse lights, and straightforward road access — a low-effort fallback that still faces the right direction with nothing tall in the way.
Wyoming's magnetic latitude is about 52°, so calibrate hard: Kp 7 earns a horizon glow, Kp 9 an overhead display, and anything less is photographic only. Face due north with the terrain falling away from you — a basin rim beats a valley floor by several degrees of horizon. At marginal Kp let the camera decide before your eyes do; the same altitude that sharpens the stars makes faint red aurora register on a sensor sooner than almost anywhere else.
