Idaho spans a surprising range — the Panhandle sees storms the Snake River Plain misses. Stanley's dark, dry basin is one of the best mid-latitude camera spots in the lower 48 when a G3-class storm lands.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Idaho's key viewing latitude sits near 51° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

The Stanley Basin in the Sawtooths is the anchor: it pairs the region's best darkness with an open view toward the aurora. Also worth knowing: the Panhandle north of Sandpoint, which gains a full degree of magnetic latitude over southern Idaho.
Wherever you stand, the rules are the same — get away from town glow, put a low, open horizon to the northern, and give your eyes fifteen minutes to adapt. No screen time while you wait.
The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
Inside the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve — the first of its kind in the United States — the basin floor along Highway 75 gives a low northern sightline over the Salmon River country. It is high, dry, and brutally cold on clear winter nights, which is exactly when it works.
The far Panhandle's quiet lake, with a full degree of magnetic latitude over southern Idaho. North-facing beaches on the lower lake put water under the aurora and the Selkirk crest safely off to the east.
The north shore turns the state's largest lake into a foreground mirror. You will manage Sandpoint's glow — drive east along the Hope peninsula until the town light falls behind the ridge.
A certified dark-sky park on the Snake River Plain with horizon-to-horizon lava flats. Farther south magnetically, so treat it as a G3-and-up venue.
From 51° magnetic, Kp 8 is the realistic horizon threshold and Kp 9 the overhead one — but the Panhandle sits about a degree higher magnetically than the Snake River Plain, so Sandpoint effectively runs half a Kp cheaper than Boise. Face due north with the lowest horizon you can find. Below Kp 8, run the camera first: a wide lens and a long exposure will show a red or green band on the horizon an hour before your eyes concede anything is there.
