Fairbanks sits directly under the auroral oval — this is one of the most reliable aurora regions on Earth, where a perfectly quiet Kp 0 night still often shows a green arc overhead. The question in interior Alaska is rarely the geomagnetics; it's darkness and cloud.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Alaska's key viewing latitude sits near 66° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

Cleary Summit, north of Fairbanks is the anchor: it is dark, accessible, and sits under the oval itself. Also worth knowing: Murphy Dome, Chena Lakes, and anywhere on the Steese or Elliott Highways out of town.
Wherever you stand, the rules are the same — get away from town glow, put a low, open horizon to the northern, and give your eyes fifteen minutes to adapt. No screen time while you wait.
The season runs late August to mid-April. In midsummer the sky never gets dark at this latitude — the aurora is still there, but the midnight sun hides it entirely. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
Interior Alaska's season is set by daylight, not geomagnetics. Above 64°N the sky never reaches astronomical darkness from early May through late July — the midnight sun erases even strong storms.

Moonlight matters less here than farther south — an overhead arc at Kp 2 punches through a full moon — but the faint all-sky glows and pale coronas still do best in the dark-sky weeks around new moon, especially early and late in the season.
About twenty miles up the Steese Highway, the summit pullouts sit near 2,200 feet — often above the ice fog that pools over Fairbanks on the coldest nights. The northern horizon is open and the city glow stays low in the south.
The old radar site northwest of town is the local 360-degree option: a bald summit with a road maintained in winter, dark in every direction except a faint dome of light to the southeast.
Closer and flatter — the lakes near North Pole give water reflections in autumn before freeze-up, and the drive is short enough for a school-night watch.
Far out the Steese past mile 85, this is committed-night territory: no lights, little traffic, and some of the darkest road-accessible sky in the Interior. Carry real winter gear; help is a long way off.
Fairbanks sits near 65° magnetic latitude, inside the auroral oval itself, so Kp barely decides whether you see something — Kp 0 puts an arc on the northern sky and Kp 2 pushes it overhead. Read Kp instead as a position-and-motion forecast: higher numbers pull the action south of you and speed it up. Face north on quiet nights, straight up on active ones, and skip the camera test — if the sky is clear and dark here, your eyes are enough.
