The state's northeast corner is its aurora country — a degree of extra magnetic latitude over the Black Hills and dead-flat northern horizons. G1–G2 storms put a glow up; G3 brings pillars.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and South Dakota's key viewing latitude sits near 54° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
Plan a South Dakota aurora year around two facts: the state's usable events cluster in G1–G3 storms, and its clearest skies arrive with cold. September opens the serious season — equinox-driven storms, mild nights, and the Coteau's lakes still open for reflections. October and November trade warmth for longer darkness. Deep winter is high-percentage weather: Arctic highs park over the Dakotas and leave the northern horizon crystalline for days, and a five-o'clock sunset means storms that peak in the evening — most do — unfold in full darkness. March is the second equinox spike and often the best single month. From late May through July, nights at 45°N shrink and twilight lingers, so only a major watch justifies the lost sleep. Time the moon like a photographer would: horizon-hugging G1 glows need a dark northern sky, while a G3 with pillars fights through moonlight on the Coteau without much trouble.
On the flank of the Coteau des Prairies near Sisseton, the park's ridgetops rise a few hundred feet above the plain — get above the wooded ravines and the northern horizon runs flat toward Canada.
Out in the lakes country, the old fort grounds are open, public, and dark, with little north of you but sloughs and section roads. The parade ground gives an unbroken sky and level footing for a tripod on a cold night.
The glacial lakes between Webster and Waubay give water foregrounds and enormous sky; national wildlife refuge land keeps whole quadrants unlit.
For central South Dakota, the bluff tops above the reservoir near Mobridge offer elevation and a dark sightline up the river to the north, with gravel access roads that stay drivable through most of the winter.
At 54° magnetic latitude the thresholds are middle-of-the-road: Kp 6 stands a glow on the northern horizon and Kp 8 pushes it toward overhead. Between those, expect a low arc with occasional rays — face due north and use the flat prairie, because every degree of clear horizon here is aurora you would lose to terrain elsewhere. On Kp 4–5 nights the camera is the referee: a ten-second exposure settles whether that pale band is aurora or airglow.
