Cherry Springs is the darkest certified sky in the mid-Atlantic, which is exactly what Pennsylvania's latitude demands: you need G3+ for a visible display here, and when it comes, this is where the state's photographers already are.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Pennsylvania's key viewing latitude sits near 51° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
At this magnetic latitude there is no aurora season — there are aurora events, a handful of nights per solar cycle's active years, and the calendar's job is to tell you when the dice are loaded. Equinox months load them most: a coronal mass ejection arriving in late September, October or March couples into Earth's field far more efficiently than the same eruption in June, so the great mid-latitude displays cluster there. Pennsylvania's nights are dark enough year-round — unlike the Arctic destinations, a July storm here is fully catchable — but summer haze and short nights argue for the cooler months. Winter offers the longest darkness and, at Cherry Springs' elevation, frequent stretches of dry, transparent air. Moon phase is the one variable you can plan: a G3 storm survives moonlight, but the difference between red pillars over a black sky and a washed-out glow is often the moon, so favor the new-moon window when an active region is rotating into view.
The mid-Atlantic's only gold-tier dark sky and the state's default aurora destination. The Night Sky Public Viewing Area has an open northern horizon at 2,300 feet; on announced storm nights, arrive early — the field fills.
A drive-up overlook high above the West Branch of the Susquehanna. The commanding elevation gives a long northern sightline over the valley, useful when the display never climbs far off the horizon — which at this latitude it usually doesn't.
On the Allegheny plateau near Mount Jewett, with dark northern sky over the gorge. The skywalk area closes at night, but the surrounding overlook ground still offers a clean horizon.
Rimrock and Jakes Rocks, above the Allegheny Reservoir, back up Cherry Springs on the west side of the state — genuinely dark, paved access, and water below the northern view.
Pennsylvania sits near 51° magnetic latitude, so be honest about thresholds: Kp 8 for a horizon display, Kp 9 — a G4–G5 storm — before anything approaches overhead. Face due north and expect the classic mid-latitude form: a deep red glow and tall pillars low on the horizon rather than dancing curtains. Your camera sees it first every time; a fifteen-second exposure will pull crimson out of a sky your eyes call empty, so shoot the northern horizon before deciding the alert was a bust.
