Lake Erie is Ohio's aurora asset — a water horizon due north with no Cleveland glow if you pick your beach. This is G3-and-up territory, but the 2024 superstorms proved Ohio gets real shows when the big ones land.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Ohio's key viewing latitude sits near 51° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
Beyond its anchor status, the working details: the mile of natural sand faces open water due north, and walking east toward the Fairport Harbor breakwall pulls you away from the parking-lot lights. Cleveland's dome stays low in the west, off-axis from the show.
Geauga County's certified dark-sky park near Montville, built for astronomy with red-light paths and open observing fields. Inland means no water horizon, but the tree lines are managed low and the darkness is the best in northeast Ohio.
The northwest option east of Toledo, with beach and boardwalk sightlines across the bay toward the open lake. Toledo's glow sits west; the northern horizon over water is clean.
Four miles offshore, which subtracts the entire mainland light shelf. The north shore near Glacial Grooves faces nothing but lake until Canada — the constraint is the ferry schedule, so an overnight stay is part of the plan.
Ohio's numbers are blunt: Kp 8 for a horizon display, Kp 9 before anything approaches overhead. From 51° magnetic the aurora lives low in the north, which is why the Erie shoreline matters — a water horizon recovers the two or three degrees of sky that trees and buildings steal inland. Face due north. Below G4 intensity, run 10–15 second exposures before trusting your eyes; the storm-time red glow registers on a sensor well before it crosses the visual threshold.
