North Dakota is quietly one of the best aurora states in the lower 48: high magnetic latitude, flat horizons in every direction, and almost no light pollution once you leave the towns. G1 storms deliver here regularly.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and North Dakota's key viewing latitude sits near 56° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
North Dakota's season runs longer and busier than its neighbors' because the threshold is so low — G1 does it. The shape of the year:
Moon strategy is simple here: a Kp 5 display overhead shrugs off moonlight, but the routine Kp 3–4 arcs sitting on the northern horizon are far better in the new-moon half of the month.
In the Turtle Mountains on the Manitoba line, the park adds lake reflections to the region's darkest sky. The low forested hills are the one place in the state where you should think about your sightline north.
Northwest of Minot near Kenmare, the refuge's long glacial valley runs north–south; from the rim roads the aurora stands over the water with Minot's glow well off to the southeast.
The reservoir gives miles of open water horizon, and the public access points along the north side put the darkness of the Missouri Plateau at your back.
The North Unit badlands are the western option — deep darkness over the Little Missouri, with canyon rims that give clean, elevated horizons. It is a long drive from anywhere, which is exactly why the sky is what it is.
North Dakota sits near 56° magnetic latitude, so the ladder is short: Kp 3–4 often puts a camera-visible arc on the northern horizon, Kp 5 brings naked-eye structure, and Kp 7 moves the show overhead. Face north — the flat land keeps the geometry honest, with no terrain stealing degrees of sky. On Kp 3 nights let a long exposure find the arc first; once rays appear you will not need the screen again.
