The Adirondack interior is the East Coast's best dark-sky pocket, and upstate New York's latitude means G2 storms are genuinely watchable there. Tupper Lake hosts an observatory community for a reason.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and New York's key viewing latitude sits near 53° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

Tupper Lake in the Adirondacks is the anchor: it pairs the region's best darkness with an open view toward the aurora. Also worth knowing: the Tug Hill plateau and Lake Ontario's eastern shore.
Wherever you stand, the rules are the same — get away from town glow, put a low, open horizon to the northern, and give your eyes fifteen minutes to adapt. No screen time while you wait.
The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
The Adirondacks reward patience differently in each quarter of the year.
New-moon weeks matter most for the marginal Kp 5–6 nights, when the arc is dim and low.
The observatory town extends its reputation for a reason: the surrounding forest is some of the darkest ground east of the Mississippi. Public water access on the lake's south side gives an open line north across the water.
Deeper into the western Adirondacks and darker still. The hamlet is tiny, the lake is big, and the view north from the public shoreline is interrupted by nothing but low forested ridgeline.
Open farm and snowmobile country above Lake Ontario with low horizons in every direction. In lake-effect season check the radar first — the plateau makes its own weather.
Lake Ontario's eastern shore turns the lake itself into your dark horizon. Standing on the beach, the nearest light source due north is Canada, far over the curve of the water. The park's day-use lots sit steps from the sand.
At 53° magnetic latitude New York sits a full step better than southern New England: Kp 6 — a routine G2 storm — puts a visible arc on the northern horizon from dark Adirondack ground, and Kp 8 brings colour overhead. Face due north, ideally across water or a valley. On Kp 5 nights, run the camera anyway; a green rim often registers on a 10-second frame from Tupper Lake while the eye still reads blank sky.
