New Hampshire's Great North Woods reach almost to 45.5° — the top of New England — and the moose-country darkness up there is real. It's the state's one genuinely good aurora latitude.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and New Hampshire's key viewing latitude sits near 54° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

Pittsburg and the Connecticut Lakes region is the anchor: it pairs the region's best darkness with an open view toward the aurora. Also worth knowing: Errol and the Androscoggin headwaters country.
Wherever you stand, the rules are the same — get away from town glow, put a low, open horizon to the northern, and give your eyes fifteen minutes to adapt. No screen time while you wait.
The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
The Great North Woods season runs on darkness and cloud, not on any change in the aurora itself. September and October are the honest peak: equinox storms arrive more often, Pittsburg's nights stretch past ten hours, and the fall air is drier than summer's haze. November through February brings the longest nights of the year but also New England's grimmest cloud statistics — nor'easters and upslope flurries erase whole weeks, so treat winter alerts as a coin flip and be ready to drive the moment a gap opens. March is the second equinox window and often cleaner than midwinter. April through August still counts at 45°N, where real darkness never disappears; a strong storm in late June has perhaps three usable hours around 1 a.m., which was enough in May 2024. Work the moon deliberately — most of what Kp 6–7 shows here is a low red band that a bright moon flattens, so favor the new-moon fortnight and keep the camera out regardless.
The largest of the Connecticut Lakes chain above Pittsburg, with pullouts along US-3 that look straight up the lake toward Quebec. The water gives a low northern sightline that the surrounding spruce ridges otherwise deny.
South of the lakes chain and easier to reach, with shoreline campsites and boat-launch clearings facing north over the water. Darkness here is as good as New England offers — the nearest real light dome is across the border in Sherbrooke.
A fire-tower summit south of Errol with a wide sweep across the Androscoggin country. The elevation buys you a horizon the valley floors cannot, and the access road is short enough for a fast late-night decision.
Straddling the Maine line near Errol, big, undeveloped, and dark. The Route 26 shoreline pullouts on the western arm face usefully north; loons and moose are the only company at 2 a.m.
From 54° magnetic, Kp 6 puts an arc on Pittsburg's northern horizon and Kp 8 is what it takes to pull the display overhead — a threshold met only a few times per solar cycle. Face due north across water where you can; the lakes exist to lower that horizon. At Kp 5–6 assume the camera sees it first: a 10-second exposure showing a green rim or red pillars is your cue to keep watching, because eyes adapt into a strengthening substorm.
