Montana's border country is among the best aurora latitude in the contiguous US, and it comes with some of the darkest public land in the country. A G1 storm here is already a show; a G2 can fill the northern sky.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Montana's key viewing latitude sits near 55° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

St. Mary, on the east side of Glacier National Park is the anchor: it pairs the region's best darkness with an open view toward the aurora. Also worth knowing: the Hi-Line along US-2, and Fort Peck Lake for the eastern part of the state.
Wherever you stand, the rules are the same — get away from town glow, put a low, open horizon to the northern, and give your eyes fifteen minutes to adapt. No screen time while you wait.
The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.

Time winter trips to the new moon: snow cover doubles moonlight, and at a marginal Kp 5 a washed-out northern horizon costs you the whole event. One local quirk worth knowing — chinook winds off the Front can scour the sky clear within hours of a gloomy forecast, so check the satellite loop before writing off a night.
On Glacier's east side the mountains stop and the prairie begins, so look north-northeast over open plains rather than into the peaks. Duck Lake, just up the road near Babb, adds water reflections and an unobstructed border-country horizon.
Two hundred–plus miles of railroad towns — Shelby, Havre, Malta, Glasgow — separated by some of the emptiest country in the lower 48. Any section-line road gets you away from the small, widely spaced light domes in minutes.
The Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge wrapping Fort Peck Reservoir is one of the largest dark zones in the contiguous US. Big water, badlands breaks, and access roads that turn to gumbo when wet — go dry or don't go far. The dam area near Fort Peck town is the paved fallback, with open sky north across the water.
At 55° magnetic the arithmetic is simple: Kp 5 for an arc on the northern horizon, Kp 7 for overhead color. Face north over prairie, not into the mountains — at threshold Kp the display sits low enough that a single ridge hides all of it. Under a G1 the eye often registers only a pale band; a phone on night mode pointed north settles the question in ten seconds. Montana's dry air is a real asset when the Kp is marginal — transparency does some of the work.
