Massachusetts is honest mid-latitude: it takes a G3 storm to put visible color on the northern horizon, and the big ones (May 2024 did it) to go higher. The trick is a flat, dark northern horizon — the coast north of Boston or the Quabbin.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Massachusetts's key viewing latitude sits near 52° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
New England's aurora season is really two seasons stitched together by the equinoxes. September and October are the reliable heart of it: storm statistics peak, nights stretch past eleven hours, and the Atlantic weather has not yet turned. March matches that geomagnetic spike on the other side of winter, often with brutally transparent post-frontal air. Between them, November through February gives the longest darkness Massachusetts gets — useful, since a mid-latitude display may only show for twenty minutes — but nor'easter cloud shields can erase a whole storm window. Summer is the thin end: from late May to mid-July true darkness lasts barely five hours, and a G3 arriving at local noon is simply missed. Plan around the moon rather than around it: a display bright enough to see at 52° magnetic latitude is bright enough to survive a half moon, but the faint camera-only events near Kp 7 need dark-sky weeks. Keep gas in the car in October and March.
The state's best northern water horizon — the beach bends enough that the view north runs up the coast past the New Hampshire line. Winter parking is straightforward and the dunes block headlights from Route 1A.
Marsh and barrier beach with almost no lighting of its own. The refuge gate closes at dusk, but the northern parking areas outside it still give a flat, dark line across the marshes.
The interior's darkest sky sits over the protected watershed. The numbered gates along Routes 202 and 9 open onto water views; the ones on the reservoir's west side look north across miles of unlit forest.
The state's highest point clears the Berkshire valleys and their village glow. The summit road closes seasonally, so in winter this becomes a snowshoe commitment — bring more warmth than you think you need.
From 52° magnetic latitude, Kp 7 is the honest floor for anything visible — a low reddish glow due north — and Kp 9 is what it takes for overhead colour of the May 2024 kind. Face true north, not magnetic north, and demand a horizon free of Boston's dome. At Kp 6–7, trust the camera before your eyes: a 15-second exposure will show the arc while you still see nothing, and rising structure in successive frames means stay put.
