The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
At 48° magnetic there is no aurora season in the usual sense — Colorado's calendar only matters on the handful of nights a G4–G5 storm arrives, and history says those cluster around the equinoxes. The shortgrass prairie northeast of Fort Collins offers what the Front Range cannot: a flat, unobstructed northern horizon with only ranch lights between you and Wyoming. Roads are gravel but passable in dry weather, and you can position south of any given light dome within minutes.
A certified dark-sky park on the plains near Orchard, with a reservoir that can double the show as reflection. It is close enough to I-76 for a same-night decision from Denver, though Greeley's glow sits low in the northwest.
The San Luis Valley's ringing mountains block city light almost completely, and the park's certified skies are among the darkest in the lower 48. The Sangre de Cristos crowd the northeast horizon, so walk out onto the dune field or the valley floor for the lowest sightline.
