All of Iceland sits at auroral latitude — Reykjavík itself sees overhead displays — so the Icelandic question is never Kp, it's the weather. Chase the clear gaps between Atlantic fronts and the sky does the rest.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Iceland's key viewing latitude sits near 69° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

Þingvellir National Park is the anchor: it is dark, accessible, and sits under the oval itself. Also worth knowing: the Snæfellsnes peninsula and the south-coast black beaches.
Wherever you stand, the rules are the same — get away from town glow, put a low, open horizon to the northern, and give your eyes fifteen minutes to adapt. No screen time while you wait.
The season runs late August to mid-April. In midsummer the sky never gets dark at this latitude — the aurora is still there, but the midnight sun hides it entirely. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
Plan around the moon only loosely — at 69° magnetic, displays are often bright enough to punch through moonlight, and a lit foreground of ice or surf can even help the photograph.
Reykjavík's own watch point — a lighthouse spit at the peninsula's tip with open water to the north and the city at your back. Enough for overhead nights; for faint arcs, drive out of town.
The peninsula's north coast faces open ocean, with Kirkjufell the most-photographed foreground in the country. It sits two hours from Reykjavík and often under a different weather cell — worth checking when the capital is socked in.
The black beaches face south, away from the auroral maximum, but at this latitude displays fill the whole sky and reflect off wet sand. Keep well back from the water — the sneaker waves here are genuinely dangerous at night.
Icebergs drifting under an active sky, with no settlement of any size for tens of kilometres. Darkness is total; the lagoon car park puts you steps from the shoreline.
Iceland sits at 69° magnetic — inside the auroral oval — so read Kp as a placement forecast rather than a yes/no. Kp 0–1 keeps a quiet arc low in the north; Kp 2 brings it overhead; a genuine storm can push the main band south of you, so scan the whole sky. Face north by default, but on active nights face wherever it is clear. The camera-first trick matters less here than almost anywhere — most Icelandic displays are naked-eye obvious.
