Finnish Lapland sees aurora on roughly two of every three clear, dark nights — the whole region sits at oval latitude. The glass-igloo industry exists here for a reason; the lakeside darkness away from resorts works just as well.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Finland's key viewing latitude sits near 64° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

Rovaniemi and Finnish Lapland is the anchor: it is dark, accessible, and sits under the oval itself. Also worth knowing: Kilpisjärvi in the far northwest, statistically Finland's best sky.
Wherever you stand, the rules are the same — get away from town glow, put a low, open horizon to the northern, and give your eyes fifteen minutes to adapt. No screen time while you wait.
The season runs late August to mid-April. In midsummer the sky never gets dark at this latitude — the aurora is still there, but the midnight sun hides it entirely. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.

Finland's statistical best, in the far-northwest arm where the country meets the Norwegian mountains. The lake gives a wide northern horizon under Saana fell, and the village is small enough that darkness starts at the edge of the parking lot.
A thousand square kilometers of open water — then open ice — in the far north. Any shoreline pull-off along the E75 works; the scale of the lake means an unobstructed sky in every direction.
Bare-topped fells rising above the treeline in western Lapland. A short climb buys a 360-degree horizon, and the park's air is among the cleanest measured in the world, which shows in sky clarity.
The hill across the river from the city. The summit trails escape most of Rovaniemi's glow and face north — a twenty-minute answer when the forecast jumps mid-evening and you have no time to drive farther into Lapland.
At 64° magnetic latitude you are effectively under the auroral oval, so the Kp scale works differently here than in Ireland or Minnesota. Kp 1 already puts an arc on the northern horizon; by Kp 3 the display sits overhead and can spill to the south. That means quiet-night forecasts are still worth acting on — start facing north, but check the zenith. On marginal evenings a five-second camera exposure will confirm a pale band long before your eyes commit to it.
