Whitehorse sits at the auroral oval's doorstep — quiet nights routinely show arcs, and any elevated activity fills the sky. The Yukon's aurora season is limited only by its midnight sun.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Yukon's key viewing latitude sits near 64° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

The Takhini valley outside Whitehorse is the anchor: it is dark, accessible, and sits under the oval itself. Also worth knowing: Kluane's lake country and the Dempster Highway for the ambitious.
Wherever you stand, the rules are the same — get away from town glow, put a low, open horizon to the northern, and give your eyes fifteen minutes to adapt. No screen time while you wait.
The season runs late August to mid-April. In midsummer the sky never gets dark at this latitude — the aurora is still there, but the midnight sun hides it entirely. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
Layer the moon on top: the dark fortnight shows faint arcs the full moon hides, though overhead displays here survive either way.
The default, fifteen to thirty minutes northwest of town off the Klondike Highway: broad valley horizons, pull-offs clear of traffic, and full darkness once the city glow drops behind the ridge.
The quick high-ground answer — a short drive climbing southwest of the city to a subalpine lake basin with an open sky and almost no lights. The road is plowed but icy; the lake ice itself makes a flat viewing floor in winter.
Two hours west on the Alaska Highway, the Yukon's largest lake under the front ranges of Kluane. The pull-offs near the south end give enormous water-or-ice horizons, and the mountains stay usefully to the south, out of the aurora's way.
For the ambitious, up the Dempster Highway: jagged peaks, zero light pollution, and latitude enough that displays regularly fill the whole sky. Self-sufficiency is mandatory — services are effectively nil.
The Yukon sits near 64° magnetic latitude, on the oval's doorstep: Kp 1 is enough for an arc over the northern horizon and Kp 3 pulls the show overhead, so most clear, dark nights justify a drive. Face north from the valley floors, but on rising activity watch the zenith — the transition from horizon band to corona happens fast here. At Kp 1 with haze, trust a five-second exposure over your eyes; green on the screen means stay out.
