Southern Quebec behaves like northern New England — G2 storms show, G3 fills the sky — but drive north past the Saguenay and the odds climb fast. Mont-Mégantic is the world's first certified dark-sky reserve and the accessible anchor.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Quebec's key viewing latitude sits near 55° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

The season runs late August to mid-April, and the weeks around the equinoxes (September–October and March) are statistically the strongest of the year. Midsummer nights are too short and bright to compete. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
Southern Quebec's aurora year is a storm calendar, not a nightly one: at 55° magnetic you are waiting on G2-class events, and those cluster at the equinoxes. September–October is the prime run — mild nights at Mont-Mégantic's elevation, easy road access, and the year's best odds of a Kp 6 evening. December through February splits between brilliant cold clearances and long grey stretches; when an arctic high parks overhead, transparency is superb, but plan those trips inside the new-moon week because full moonlight on snowpack erases marginal displays. March repeats the equinox spike on deep snow. North of the Saguenay the arithmetic improves by roughly a full Kp point, and the season runs longer at both ends — Côte-Nord nights are already usable by mid-August, two weeks before the Eastern Townships get real darkness. May through July is a poor bet in the south: short nights, low odds, and only the far north shore keeps a slim after-midnight window.

The high plateau on Route 175 between Quebec City and the Saguenay: no communities for well over a hundred kilometres, dark pullouts throughout, and moose on the road after dark — drive accordingly.
From Mont-Mégantic's latitude, Kp 6 puts an arc on the northern horizon and Kp 8 — a rare, G4-class night — brings it overhead. Face due north and buy elevation or open farmland: at these thresholds the display starts as a low glow that terrain hides easily. At Kp 5–6 a camera pulls green out of what the eye reads as grey haze, so expose first and decide after. Every hour driven northeast past the Saguenay meaningfully lowers the Kp you need.
