Yellowknife markets itself as the aurora capital of North America and earns it: directly under the oval, with continental-dry clear skies and displays on most dark nights of the season. If the aurora is anywhere, it's here.
Magnetic latitude — not geographic — decides who sees a given storm, and Northwest Territories's key viewing latitude sits near 69° magnetic. As a rule of thumb from NOAA's Kp view-line:

The Ingraham Trail east of Yellowknife is the anchor: it is dark, accessible, and sits under the oval itself. Also worth knowing: Aurora Village and the frozen lakes outside town.
Wherever you stand, the rules are the same — get away from town glow, put a low, open horizon to the northern, and give your eyes fifteen minutes to adapt. No screen time while you wait.
The season runs late August to mid-April. In midsummer the sky never gets dark at this latitude — the aurora is still there, but the midnight sun hides it entirely. Statistically, the strongest hours are around local magnetic midnight — roughly 10 pm to 2 am. Substorms come in cycles an hour or more apart, so a promising night deserves more than one look. A bright moon washes out faint displays; check the phase before driving.
Moonlight matters less here than anywhere south — overhead displays punch through a full moon — but faint all-sky texture still favors the dark fortnight.
Thirty kilometers out the Ingraham Trail, the standard answer: a big lake horizon, boat-launch parking, and dark sky in every direction. Busy on strong-forecast nights, empty otherwise.
Farther down the Trail, the parking area alone gives clear sky; the short trail opens onto bare Canadian Shield rock where you can set up away from headlights.
In deep winter the road across Great Slave Lake to Dettah puts you on kilometers of flat ice minutes from downtown — the fastest possible exit from city glow, with a horizon like the open sea.
The fallback for a no-car night: the trail around the lake shields enough of Yellowknife's light that overhead displays — which is most of them here — show fine. It also makes a low-stakes first check before committing to the drive out the Trail.
At 69° magnetic latitude the Kp index nearly stops mattering: Kp 0 can put an arc on Yellowknife's horizon and Kp 2 fills the zenith. Forecasts that read as dead quiet elsewhere are viewing nights here. The practical skill is timing substorms, not thresholds — arcs build, break into motion, and recover on a rough 90-minute rhythm, so stay out through the first lull. Look north first, then straight up; strong nights here end with the display behind you, to the south.
